What makes Tirzepatide different to source
Tirzepatide occupies an unusual position: unlike retatrutide, it has an approved pharmaceutical form. The FDA approved it as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes in May 2022, as Zepbound for chronic weight management in November 2023, and as Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea in December 2024. Research-grade tirzepatide is a different product entirely and is not a substitute for those medicines.
That approved status cuts both ways for sourcing. It means a well-characterised reference molecule exists, so identity testing by mass spectrometry is genuinely meaningful. It also means Eli Lilly has an active commercial interest in the compound, and has pursued litigation against suppliers — one of the pressures behind the vendor closures through 2025 and 2026.
Status as of 10 October 2026: tirzepatide remains approved only as Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound. No research vendor's product is that drug. Since the 2025–26 enforcement wave almost no vendor lists tirzepatide by name either: it is sold as GLP-2 T, GLP-2 TRZ and other house codes.
