Semaglutide vs Ozempic: they are the same molecule. Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide — the difference is the approved indication and maximum dose.
Same Molecule, Different Brands
Ozempic (semaglutide): FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, maximum dose 2 mg/week. Wegovy (semaglutide): FDA-approved for chronic weight management, maximum dose 2.4 mg/week. Both are manufactured by Novo Nordisk and contain identical active ingredient.
Dose Difference
The only clinical difference is the maximum approved dose: Ozempic tops out at 2 mg/week; Wegovy continues to 2.4 mg/week. The additional 0.4 mg produces approximately 2–3% additional weight loss in clinical trials.
Research-Grade Semaglutide
Research-grade semaglutide is the same molecule as Ozempic/Wegovy, available from research chemical suppliers for laboratory use. It is not FDA-approved for human use and is not a substitute for prescription semaglutide.
